How to Build a Daily Routine That Sticks

Learn how to organize your day into a rhythm that helps you get things done and still have time for fun. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.

  1. List your must-dos. Write down everything you have to do every day, like waking up, brushing your teeth, school, homework, and dinner. Don't worry about the order yet, just get them all on paper.
  2. Group your tasks. Look at your list and group items into 'Morning,' 'After School,' and 'Before Bed.' This helps you see the flow of your day.
  3. Assign time blocks. Estimate how long each task takes. Use your ruler to draw a timeline on your poster board and write your tasks into those time slots. Ask a grown-up to help you check if your estimates are realistic.
  4. Build in breaks. A routine isn't just work! Add 'free time' or 'play time' blocks in between your tasks. This gives your brain a chance to rest so you don't get tired.
  5. Test and adjust. Try your new routine for three days. If you find you need more time for homework or less time for chores, move your sticky notes around to adjust the schedule.
