How to Talk to Your Parents About Starting Lessons

Learn how to prepare and present your request for new lessons in a way that shows your parents you are ready to commit.

  1. Do your research. Before you talk, find out what is involved. Look up where lessons happen, how long they are, and if there is any equipment you might need. Knowing these details shows your parents you have put real thought into your request.
  2. Write down your reasons. Write down why you want to do this. Is it because you love the activity, or because you want to reach a specific goal? Explain that you are ready to practice regularly and balance this with your schoolwork and chores.
  3. Ask for a meeting. Instead of bringing it up randomly, ask your parents, 'Could we find a time to chat about something I'm interested in?' This gives them a chance to listen when they are ready to focus on you.
  4. Listen to their feedback. Your parents might have questions about budget, schedule, or transportation. Listen to their concerns without getting upset. They may need to look into options or think about the logistics, so be patient if they say they need time to decide.
