How to Clean Up Your Kitchen Mess
A simple, step-by-step guide to help you clear the counters and wash the dishes after you finish cooking or eating.
- Clear the counters. Start by putting away any leftover food in containers. Take all your dirty dishes to the sink area. If there are crumbs or spills on the counter, use a damp cloth to wipe them into your hand or a dustpan.
- Scrape and soak. Scrape any extra food off your plates and bowls into the trash or compost bin. If a pan has crusty food stuck to it, fill it with warm water and a drop of soap and let it sit for a few minutes to make scrubbing easier.
- Wash the dishes. Squirt a little soap onto your sponge. Start with the least dirty items, like cups and silverware, then move to plates, and save the greasy pots and pans for last. Rinse each item with warm water until the bubbles are gone.
- Dry and put away. Place your clean dishes in a drying rack or on a clean towel. Once they are dry, put them back in their proper cupboards or drawers. If you aren't sure where something goes, ask a grown-up for help.
