How to Write a Letter to a Friend
A step-by-step guide to writing a thoughtful, handwritten letter that will make your friend smile. HowTo: Family Edition: family how-tos that actually help.
- Start with a greeting. At the top of your paper, write 'Dear' followed by your friend's name. Add a comma at the end of their name, like 'Dear Sam,'.
- Share your news. Write a few sentences about what you have been doing lately. You could mention a fun game you played, a book you finished, or something funny that happened at school.
- Ask a question. To keep the conversation going, ask your friend a question. Try 'How has your week been?' or 'What is your favorite thing you did this summer?'
- Sign off. Choose a closing word like 'Your friend,' or 'Best,' and write your name underneath it. If you have extra space, draw a small picture or add a sticker.
- Address the envelope. Fold your letter so it fits inside the envelope. Write your friend's name and address in the center of the front. Ask a grown-up to help you write your own return address in the top left corner.
